At this point... most of my friends and family that has heard about my 'adventure' have asked or commented that it sounds just like the "Julie & Julia" Movie that came out last year.
There's definitely truth to that! I can't even think to tell it another way... throughout last year - learning the basics of cooking by forcing Pampered Chef recipes (how else could I teach other people how to cook in cooking shows? Ha!) through my thick skull... started something. I'm not sure what.. but something.
Then.. the movie came out. And.. as I'm an avid reader... I wanted to read the books (Both of them - Julie & Julia and Julia Child's Autobiography - My Life in France). I received them both for Christmas, as well as the DVD of the movie - and it's seriously taken until now to read them both. (I love to read... didn't say I did it fast! I enjoy it... a few minutes at a time.. before falling asleep... :)
It was during Julia's book that I started falling in love with food. When I sold PC - it was more to learn about sales and marketing - something different, different skills to educate myself, and I wanted to LEARN something (ahem, work wasn't doing it for me). I DID learn to like cooking through PC... but reading Julia's book make it so much more.. ALIVE. The food came alive, going to the grocery store.. was FUN. I found new things - and still find new things (Ginger Root, Arborio rice... who knew??).
I wanted to learn what MADE a recipe a recipe, what made something taste fantastic. Why were sauces such a big deal? How many ways could you really cook a chicken? And then.. there's something else that I found that I shared with them. Julia didn't start cooking until her late 30's. Julie felt lost at 30 in a government job. Me? I'm on my second career trying to figure out what I want to do when I grow up. However, through them, I realize - it's not too late. It's never too late.
You just have to find what you love - and go after it even when you haven't a clue where it's taking you.
